we should accept disaster when the time of disaster comes,
we shuld accept death when the time of death comes,
this is the mistry strategy to avoid the disaster, Ryoukan said.

Some selected Haikus
(S.Goldstein, S.Mizuguchi and F.Kitajima, "RYOKAN:SELECTED TANKA HAIKU")

left behind by the thief: the moon in my window

about the pathos of departing autumn, whom can I tell?

my home is made of bamboo posts and rush blinds: please tolerate these
and be content with a cup of sake

though I came out with the intention of begging for rice,
I've spent my time picking and plucking violets in the spring field

without even staying to the tainted world, "Be clean!"
the water of the mountain stream purifies itself on its own

red seaweed and sake and Japanease horseradish-with such gifts
my New York will not now be lonely or sparse!

about the pathos of departing autumn, whom can I tell?
on my way home at dusk, some goosefoot plants in my basket

I know not why I cannot get to sleep with my heart pounding-
to think tomorrow will be the first day of spring

in the autumn wind the figure of a man standing alone

I would like to leave something as a memory:
flowers in spring, cuckoos in summer, tinted leaves in fall

for my fire the wind brings enough fallen leaves

should people ask if Ryoukan will leave a deathbed poem,
say he said, "Namu-amida-butsu"

the persimmon-gatherer-- his balls are cold in the fall wind
